My wife was a patient of Dr. Kemmeter and was very involved in supporting pre-op patients both thro ugh personal meetings and support groups. Through her invotvement.| had the privilege to meet many post-op bariatric patients The thing that I was never really able to understand is that almost all of them had problems identifying with their new. thinner bodies. They had all lived life being overweight For so long that being thin was a new and strange world to them They look in mirrors and don't recognize the person looking back. they go clothes shopping and don't believe that they can wear a size 8 or (or 34 inch waist for the men). they see a weight restriction on something and automatically wonder if they will be allowed to participate.
The reason I bring this up, is that you will see this story a lot. but my story is opposite. I never realized I was obese. Sure. | always realized | was a big guy. but I always thought | was active and could maybe stand to lose a few pounds. but who couldnt. So. what inspired me to get bariatric surgery? WelL I started having some realizations that my weight was more of a problem that I realized. | remember going on a family trip to Cedar Point and not being able to ride a great num ber of the rides. | waited in line for an hour to ride the Millennium Force roller coaster only to that | could not fasten the seatbelt. Was I really that big?
That is the question I was asking myself as | took the walk of shame off the platform and down the exit while the rest of my family was on the ride. I knew that there were a number of rides I would not be riding that day. l also had to go out and buy newjeans as the 46's were a little snug and I fell much better in a 48. | travel for work and although | had never had to request the seatbelt extension. I generally had to suck everything in to get buckled and sit in discomfort for the entirety of the trip. I was too wide for the seat and too big for the seatbelt I must have been spilling over into the person next to me, but was always content in blaming the airlines for making the seats smaller and smaller. But none of these things in themselves were enough to push me over the edge. what was the straw that broke the camels back?
I was turning 40. I had taken a promotion at work that put a lot of stress on me. | was obese, I was unhealthy, and | was a prime candidate for a heart attack I have three beautiful teenage daughters that | want to be there for, | want to be there to see them graduate high school | want to see them marry. I want to see them have children. I want to see their successes and failures. I want to be there to be a friend and a father and help them through their tremulous teens. In short. the real reason | looked into bariatnc surgery was so | would not leave my wife without a husband and | would not leave my girls without me in their life.
Once l made the decision to have bariatric surgery. Grand Health Partners made everything easy. They scheduled my appointments. made sure my insurance and paperwork were alt in order and scheduled the surgery. The weeks leading up to the surgery were incredibly easy. Heck the last 2 weeks they even tell you what to eat. I chose to have the Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy. I still did not believe that | was very obese and didn't think I needed anything more invaeive. Also. if the sleeve did not end up being enough. I could always have the switch portion added. Everything went as planned. Dr. Kemmeter is a Fantastic surgeon. and St. Mary's is a great place to have a procedure. I was up that night after the surgery and ready to go the next morning. although I was required to stay another day.
I cannot thank the nursing staff at 5t. Marys enough. They were wonderfut. friendly. and professional and didn't seem too agitated that | was bouncing off the walLs with energy while I was there. It has been 15 months since my surgery. I have lost 110 pounds and am down to 220 from my high of 330. I lost the 11o in about 8 months and have maintained ever since that I have become somewhat fanaticalabout working out (but there are worse thingsl l work out 4-5 times a week and mix in running and strength training. | ran my ever organized 5k on Thanksgiving Day with two of my daughters. That was about the biggest feeling of accomplishment I've ever had in my entire lifeA I would have this surgefy over and over again if | needed it to be where I currently am in health and body type. l love my body. | love that I'm healthy.
l love that l can run 5 miles, and | love the freedom that my new weight has given me. | am not as tired. l can ride all the rides al Cedar Point. | Fit in airplane seats with ease. GHP has not only given me the tool I needed to lose weight. they have given me additional tools and knowledge that I can use to maintain my weight and my health. | know if | ever have problems keeping the weight off or concerns about my health. | can goto GHP and they will be there for me. Their staff is great. The nurses. DA's. Doctors, Nutritionists. Behaviorists. and Exercise Physiologists are there to make sure that we all succeed. | cannot thank them enough for my im proved standard of living.

Now I can enjoy life again! I am doing things now that I haven't been able to do for at least 15 yrs. I love to go to the beach and walk in the sand but before my surgery it was just too hard to do. I am off all of my medications for high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Life is good!
I had my weight loss surgery on October 27, 2010. Before my surgery, I had high blood pressure and high cholesterol. I had no energy and my quality of life was at a all time low. All of the things I enjoyed like dancing, walking on the beach, going to the gym were all things that I no longer had any interest in doing anymore.
I didn't enjoy going out with friends, I didn't enjoy going shopping for clothes because of the size I had to buy nor did I have the energy to do these things. I started to have knee problems which required me to have knee replacement surgery. At that point, I decided to look into having weight loss surgery. It was definately the best decision I ever made for myself. After having the surgery, my quality of life became so enjoyable. I began doing all of the things I use to love to do. I now go to Zumba Gold three times a week, I go to the gym three times a week and I also joined a Country Line dance class. LIFE IS GOOD!
