I have been fighting my weight for many years, and on the perpetual roller coaster of repeated efforts on weight loss programs that didn't work for me. When I hit a weight that I never saw in my life, and could no longer do basic things in my life that required physical effort, I knew it was time to get serious. At my yearly checkup, I asked my doctor for a referral to a medical weight loss, so I could try to figure out what the right combinations of food would be right for my body. He referred me to Grand Health Partners and explained that I would have multiple options there. So I went to an informational seminar, and decided that the Very Low Calorie Diet (VLCD) would be the way I would go. I learned the nutrition, chemistry, math, and exercise pieces of weight loss and maintenence that I never learned before from other programs. This was the piece I was missing. The program was very easy to stick with, and after 9 months, I dropped 75 pounds and reached my goal. I continued to lose another 5 after that, to make a total loss of 80 lbs. I am back to doing all my activities plus more without exhaustion or lack of energy. I am still attending meetings and weigh in so I can continue to learn how to maintain this new lifestyle and stay on track for a healthier me. The best compliment I have received so far, is from my doctor of 38 years...he saw me at my yearly checkup, and apologized because he didn't even recognize me. :) He is very happy with my journey and so am i.
I am 25 years old and have struggled with my weight for a very long time. Ever since I was 9 years old I always seemed to be bigger than everyone else my age. I thought sports would help. I did a lot of swimming and played soccer throughout high school. Once that stopped and I went to college, I reached the heaviest weight I have ever been. My family care doctor was not much help. He said "Diet and Exercise" was my best bet, this made me feel like I was alone. I have felt hopeless in my attempts to lose weight, It felt like I was killing myself to even drop a pound. I heard a lot about weight watchers and the other programs in our area but I was very skeptical. I felt that if I went/tried/ failed I would never want to try again. My initial goal when walking into Grand Health Partners was to see if I was a candidate for the gastric sleeve. It was my birthday present to myself to at least give it a try. I didn't meet the requirements for the gastric sleeve and if I wanted it, I would have to pay out of pocket. The PA advised me that I would be a very good candidate for the Very Low Calorie Diet or VLCD. My initial reaction was, "ARE YOU NUTS!? How am I supposed to only eat 800 Calories a day?" However, I was intrigued with the weekly nurse visits and the frequent doctor appointments and most importantly the every other week blood work. After sitting down with Tracy the program coordinator, I felt good about the support I would receive during the 12/16 week program with the Exercise, Nutrition and Behavior topic classes. I felt that it almost sounded way too good to be true. So I went with it, remember it was my birthday present to myself to at least give something a try. A total of 38 lbs in only 16 weeks! Please don't wait for a reason like I did, take action right now and you can be the new you tomorrow.
My story starts out by having my son's mother-in-law pass away very unexpectedly. Seeing my son and other loved ones realize how devastating a loss of life is to the surviving family broke my heart. Thinking that I was heading to an early grave too if I did not do something serious about losing weight. I was having circulation problems in both legs, diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and could barely walk 2 blocks without having to stop. I started the Very Low Calorie Diet, determined to make this work. I worked very hard at it, and did not give up, had the support from my entire family plus a network of friends. I went public with my weight loss, wrote a blog, posted on Facebook and kept everyone aware of what I was doing. Oh there were days that I struggled, you see, I own a small "mom and pop" type pizza place. We've had it for over 10 years now. So working there up to 70 hours a week while on the VLCD was HARD to say the least!!!! But I kept on, I began to walk, slowly at first, but kept it up. My first week was a whopping 15 pound loss!!! I was thrilled, and beginning to feel the effects of weight coming off. So I signed up for the Walk From Obesity 5K walk at the end of September. Now mind you, I had NEVER walked that far, but set a goal. MET IT, not only did I accomplish that, I walked an additional mile, almost 10,000 steps. WOW was I thrilled!!! Now I can routinely walk 2 miles a day or more, and I've kept it up. I have completed my VLCD and am in the Living Healthy portion, I am proud to say I have lost over 45 pounds, 8 inches off my waist, 5 inches off my hips and have dropped 3 sizes!!!! I'm feeling great, I still have more I want to lose, but I am well on my way. I would never have had this success if it weren't for Grand Health Partners!!! The staff there are terrific, pleasant, kind and caring. Not one person ever made me feel fat, never ever looked at me in an unkind way, always full of support and kindness. Shoulders were there if I needed it and hugs all around too. Awesome place, thank you so much for giving me my life back.
When I joined GHP, I was about 220 pounds, I had just lost 13 pounds. (233 heaviest) I was a diabetic, had high cholesterol, I took medication to offset the side effects from the diabetic medication! That was just too much! I was wearing a size 18-20. Always having to go to the back of the store to shop! I started at GHP on the VLCD program. I started losing 3-5 pounds a week. Soon my doctor confirmed I am no longer a diabetic. NO MEDS! I love to exercise now! Never thought I would enjoy physical activity this much. The staff here is great! I have met so many new friends here at GHP, I feel like GHP and their clients are my new found family members. We encourage each other and better yet, everyone understands how each feel, and what each other is going through mentally and physically. No judging. No discrimination. I have lost a total of 70 pounds! I feel great! My husband loves it! My Husband, children and other family continues to push and encourage me. I went from sizes 18-20 or 3x to sizes 9 to 12 (depending on clothes) and sizes small to medium. My shoe size even went down 1 whole size! I feel great! However, keeping a positive mindset and not falling back in old habits are challenging. But GHP continues to help keep me on my feet. I will continue to pray, keep God first, (Because without him, I could not have done this)and eating healthy. I shop in the front of the store now; I DO NOT dare look at the back of the store anymore!!!
When I started the very low calorie diet, I was at my highest weight ever. I was suffering from reflux, having trouble with my knees and feet, and my cholesterol had skyrocketed to 266. I was a mess! I had tried many other weight loss plans in the past, but I had never been able to keep the weight off. I feel that this time is different. The classes and the people who work at GHP have taught me a different way of life. I used to eat primarily junk food and sweets, but after 16 weeks on the program, I found I don’t even desire those things anymore. I was able to change my thinking from being on a “diet”, to making a lifestyle change. I never thought I could feel this way! I have lost 55 pounds, and I am having a lot of fun fitting in to pants that are a size 6! My self confidence is soaring, my knees and feet don’t hurt, and my cholesterol is down to a healthy 177. I no longer take reflux medicine either! I would highly recommend the Grand Health Partners team of professionals. I couldn’t have done it without the help, support, and education they gave me.
